Don't Know the Name of Sweet Potato That Tastes Like Chestnuts

by Miranda R.
(Hollywood, Florida - USA)

I love them because when I eat them I feel like I'm eating chestnuts. They really taste like chestnuts. I love them. I don't always find them and also unfortunately more often than not they tend to be very dry, though I wish I knew the name of these sweet potatoes.

If anyone has an answer for me can you leave a comment. Thank you in advance.

Someone has created sweet potato flour already!
by: Linda Giovanna Zambanini

I just googled to find out if sweet potato flour existed and it does! You can buy it on vitacost and it's not that expensive (compared to chestnut flour that is). This flour is made of regular sweet potatoes - not the red Japanese sweet potatoes - but this gives me hope that someone could create a chestnut flour or meal substitute out of the chestnut-y Japanese sweet potatoes! Get on it food scientists! :) Here is the link to the sweet potato flour on vitacost: https://tinyurl.com/y7rxrvhj
And here is a link to a site explaining how you can make your own sweet potato flour! https://rockinwhomestead.com/sweet-potato-flour/
So there is hope! :)

Could someone please make a chestnut flour susbtitute out of these Japanese sweet potatoes?
by: Linda Giovanna Zambanini

I was just thinking...there are (white) potato flakes and potato flour. Wouldn't it be awesome if some foodie or food science expert found a way to dehydrate these Japanese sweet potatoes and create a flour or meal that would be a cheaper substitute for chestnut flour! I just bought a bag of chestnut flour for the first time ever to make castagnaccio - something i've always wanted to make. It is incredibly expensive - like $20/lb! Foodies and chestnut lovers would be forever grateful if these sweet potatoes could be turned into a chestnut substitute!

Japanese sweet potatoes
by: Walter Toki

The Japanese sweet potato Beni Azuma has a chestnut flavor when baked in foil for 2 hours at 350F. It is grown in the Ibaraki Perfecture and has a dull reddish purple skin with a pale yellow flesh that turns golden when baked. The Trader Joe's Murasaki sweet potato is very close.

I haven’t had many varieties of sweet potatoes and for that reason I don’t know about the one which you are talking about. But, I do love to eat them, as sweet potatoes are my weakness, even though I don’t like the ordinary potatoes.

The sweet potato that tastes just like chestnuts is the japanese sweet potato. The skin is reddish brown with a tinge of purple and the insides are the exact color of chestnut flesh. They taste great baked whole in the oven with the skin on. When the skin looks puffy and deflates upon cooler air, you know theyre done and ready to eat. Theyre so sweet and creamy with that savory chestnut flavor. Yummy! I get mine at the organic grocery store.

About Jerusalem Artichokes
by: Ellen

Additional info on Jerusalem Artichokes:

Jerusalem Artichoke, a tall North American plant, is a white-flesh tuber that is a member of the daisy family which includes sunflowers. This tuber is also called a sunroot or sunchoke.

It tastes like a cross between a potato and a water chestnut, or jicama (Mexican Yam - turnip).

by: Anonymous

I have just cooked what I believe is a red sweet potato (The skin is red/purple and the flesh is off white), and it tastes exactly like a chestnut.
