Cancer - Dietetic - Heart - Stroke Links

Following are links to sites for the American Cancer Society, American Dietetic Association, American Heart Association, and American Stroke Association.

Each of these organizations provide helpful information for developing a healthful diet.

For instance, at the American Cancer Society's (ACS) site there is a section called "Food & Fitness" where you can read about the ACS's guidelines for diet and activity, as well as get tips for attaining and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

At the American Dietetic Association (ADA), you can read the press release the Association did in response to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

The ADA encourages us to ask for healthy fruit and vegetable choices while at work and when dining out - especially, when at a restaurant - “Fruits and Vegetables, by Popular Demand.” Remember - ask for sweet potatoes!!!

Speaking up and asking for healthful foods will eliminate the roadblock of not having enough choices because menus will change for the better if more and more people make requests. Current statistics show that only 20-30% of Americans are eating daily 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables - even though they know the benefits of eating more.

to access the ADA's "Nutrition Fact Sheets." These sheets, developed in partnership with other groups and industry sponsors:

* Cover a wide range of topics

* Provide nutrition information

* Eating tips

* Recipes

Click here to see and learn how to use the "Diabetes Food Pyramid" which differs slightly from the general "Food Pyramid" recommended for Americans. These pyramids are visual aids for building healthful diets and making healthy eating a lifestyle.

This link to the American Heart Association takes you to a place on the site where you can learn more about how starchy vegetables like sweet potatoes can be used in meals in various ways.

The ADA recommends a goal of a total of 25-30 g of fiber per day. Also, it recommends that you be aware of calories, trans fats, saturated fat and cholesterol levels, and to avoid less healthy fats. You can do all of this by including sweet potatoes in your diet.

Finally, click here to access the American Stroke Association's web site where there is additional helpful information for eating in a healthful manner.
